News 24. Cape Town – Herbal specialist Margaret Roberts passed away, her daughter confirmed in a social media post on Saturday.
Sandy Roberts’ post on the passing away of her mother was shared over 1 100 times on Facebook by Saturday evening.
In her post, she said her mother died after spending a short time in hospital.
“It has been an honor (sic) and a privilege to be your daughter mom and work alongside you creating our dream at the Herbal Centre. I miss you more than words can say and will do my best to continue our work so that your legacy can live on.”
Roberts was a strong contributor to popularising all things herbs in SA for over 35 years. She has delivered lectures on herbs and was also a qualified physiotherapist.
Roberts operated the Margaret Roberts Herbal Centre in Magaliesburg. Here, she propagated the ideologies of natural living.
The centre boasts herb gardens, a nursery, apothecary, potager garden, chapel, lecture hall and even a fairy gallery.
I had the opportunity to organise a lecture by Margaret for a Garden Centre in Randburg in 1983, just after the launch of her first book. This is where I first met this remarkable lady, who against all odds carved a new career for herself, writing several books on herbs in later years, establishing a successful herb nursery, launching eco-friendly pesticides, and became a TV personality. But despite all the fame she remained true to her principles; being modest and passionate about the magic of her favourite plants – herbs.
I will remember her with fondness and will treasure the gift of Margaret Robert’s Book of Herbs.
