Polemonium reptans ‘Stairway to Heaven’
BRAND NEW RELEASE FOR 2014
Polemonium reptans plants have compound, oval leaves that are arranged like the rungs of a ladder, hence the common name Jacobs ladder. As a new variety ‘Stairway to heaven’ has a name that follows suit with a religious hint towards Jacob and heaven.
Polemonium reptans ‘Stairway to heaven’ is a clump-forming, evergreen perennial. It forms a low mound of green fern-like leaves with each leaflet strongly edged in creamy-white. During cooler weather the leaves are flushed with pink giving this little shrub a harlequin appearance.
Polemonium is perfectly suited to partial shade areas but can be grown in the sun in cooler climates. Be aware that too dense a shade will encourage the leaves to lose their harlequin colours leaving the plant almost entirely green .Do not plant in a hot, sunny spots as the leaves are easily burnt and the plant quickly becomes sad and unattractive.
Do plant Polemoniums in a well-drained, moist soil where it will receive regular watering. An irrigated area will be best for this plant as if it dries out between waterings it may develop brown leaves.
‘Stairway to Heaven’ has clusters of lightly fragrant violet-blue, bell-shaped flowers on a stem approximately 30 cm in length. The flowers form a strong contrast in spring between the harlequin coloured leaves and sky blue coloured flowers. A huge positive is that it is a repeat bloomer. If old flower stems are cut off, it will send out new flowers well into summer. The flowers are good cut flowers and serve as magnets to Butterflies, bees and birds.
It is buck resistant so great for farmhouse gardens!
It is an easy to care for and a low maintenance plant.
We suggest planting this little shrub in shady borders or displaying them in patio containers.
