We had a wonderful meeting on the 5th February in Stella Sohn’s gorgeous garden. Deep, lush green lawns, colourful borders and roses to die for. This lady has a keen eye for vibrant colour combinations, and quirky ornamentations.
Not satisfied with the challenges of gardening on a large scale, she embarked on a daunting project to beautify the Main street in Knysna.
Stella Sohn is the force behind the Knysna in Bloom project. The project started a few years ago after Stella tackled the garden in front of the Knysna Tourism office which inspired her do the same for the rest of the street. “I got so many positive remarks and great feedback from locals, visitors and tourists that I could not resist.”
The project is now up and running and local businesses have joined Stella, whose aim it is to bring back Knysna’s village ambience and beautify Main Road.
Big cement pots filled with a variety of indigenous and exotic plants are making a statement. “We care about our town and we are proud to live here,” says Sohn.
From vibrant yellow, red or pink ‘tolbosse’, a fynbos species, to cheerful gazanias, agapanthus, clivias and pelargoniums, not forgetting bougainvillea and Iceberg roses, all carefully chosen and perfectly positioned.
The Knysna in Bloom project, won the Proudly Knysna Category in the 2014 Sanlam Knysna Awards. Kudos to this hardworking lady who is so ably assisted by Timothy, her gardener and Rodney and his wife.
